Wheat Allergies
Overview
Wheat allergy is type of allergy which is caused due to the consumption of wheat. It is one of the most common food allergies which occurs in childrens.
Types
Wheat allergies are not classified by the reactions caused due to the protein present in wheat differs from person to person. A person with Gluten intolerance may show adverse reaction to the protein called gluten which is present in wheat.
Symptoms
The symptoms of wheat allergies may occur as soon as the allergen consume the wheat or it may take 3-4 hours for the reaction to appear. Symptoms of wheat allergies includes stomach pain, Nausea and Vomiting, Nasal congestion , swollen breathing passages and skin rashes.
Some people also develop symptoms by consuming wheat product or by inhaling wheat flour.
Causes
Wheat allergies is also caused when the person immune system take the protein present in the wheat as dangerous foreign bodies and starts producing immunoglobulin antibodies, histamine and other chemical. This produced chemical causes reaction to occur.
The protein present in wheat namely albumin, globulin, gliadin and gluten are responsible for wheat allergies. Person with allergent family background are more prone to wheat allergy.
Test
Wheat allergies can be diagnosed by skin test and blood test. In skin test a part of the skin is pricked and exposed to wheat to see if the reaction occurs or not.
Treatment
There no treatment for wheat allergies. The best way is to acoid wheat and products containing wheat. This is one the most difficult food allergy to inherit as wheat is present is many food items in our daily life.
Serious reaction can be countered with antihistamines. If Anaphylactic Shock occurs person should be medicated soon prescribed with injections of epinephrine or adrenaline.
