Milk Allergies

Overview

It is one of the most common type of allergy which is found in kids and toddlers. About 2-3% of kids under age of three year are generally milk allergent since birth, while only few outgrow milk allergy after 3 years of age.

Types

Milk reaction genrally involves with the immune system and be classified as:

Type 1: As soon as cow’s milk is fed symptoms develops.
Type 2: After few hours of consuming cow milk symptom occurs
Type 3: Symptoms only occur if large amount of cow milk is cosumed and will occur after 24 hour.

Symptoms

Symtoms of milk allergies varies from person to person, Commong symptoms include wheezing, hives and vomiting. When someone who is allergent to milk consumes milk serious symptoms may occur like blood coming with stool, loose stool, diarrhea, severe coughing and sneezing, stomach pain, rashes and runny nose.

Sometime milk allergies leads to anaphylaxis, which cases difficulty in breathing . It may be acquired with fast heartbeat, drop in blood pressure, swollen throat and internal airways, and dizziness.

Causes

The immune system is the main causing factor of milk allergy. The person’s (who is allergent to milk) immune system take the milk proteins as dangerous foreign body and starts producing immunoglobulin which in turn leads to the release of histamine and other chemicals causing milk allergies symptoms.

Milk allergies are generally caused by two protein present in the milk, casein and whey. Mostly childrens get affected by milk allergies. Family history with milk allergy is one of the most common causing factor of milk allergy.

Test

Milk allergies are simply determined by doing blood test or skin test.

Treatment

Avoiding milk or milk made products is the best way to overcome milk allergy. In case on allergic reaction , antihistamines can be taken. Severe allergic reaction are treated along with epinephrine or adrenaline injection.
