Asthma

Overview

Asthma is the disease of the respiratory system which affects the airways which carry air in and out to the lungs. Generally both adult and children are affected by this disease. People who suffers from chronic condition for a long time are called as Asthmatic.

Types

There are many types of Asthma. Some of the common types are

Child-Onset Asthma : Asthma which begins from childhood is known as Child-Onset Asthma.

Adult-Onset Asthma : It is condition When a person after reaching the age of 20 years develops Asthman.

Exercise-Induced Asthma : In this type of Asthma, people’s usually cough, wheeze or feel out of breath after exercise.

Occupational Asthma : The Asthma which is caused due to the patience’s place of work.

Nocturnal Asthma :It is triggered by allergies present in the home and occurs between midnight and 8 AM.

Steroid Resistant Asthma : If the patience have a higher level of immune activation in the airways, then it is called steroid-resistant Asthma.

Cough-Induced Asthma : The Asthma which causes severe cough is known as Cough-Induced Asthma.

Symptoms

Asthma may develops several symptoms which may include irritation in the airways and the tubes that leads air to the lungs due to inflammation. Sometimes Childrens and teenagers are seen with coughing, wheezing and tight chest.

The most common symptom is Asthma is breathlessness. Sometimes due to fear and anxiety of the Asthma symptoms, patience may also experience other symptoms like rapid heartbeat, sweating and light-headedness.

The symptoms occurred may be mild or severe depending on the health, age and physical condition of the patience. Some peoples are also enable to inhale enough air inside and feel tight pressure when they get asthma attack, In such a condition it is very necessary to visit the doctors. Such breathlessness is caused when the breathing tubes are filled with mucus, which makes it hard for the air to move inside the lungs.

Causes

Asthma has affected millions of people around the world and it may prove to be dangerous if not monitored properly. Asthma attack may occur at any time of the day and is generally triggered by following :

  • Stress
  • Medications
  • Colds
  • Allergens
  • Vigorous Exercise
  • Pollution or Cold Air

Mostly various types of allergens like dust, molds and foods are responsible for triggering Asthma attack.

Tests

Asthma can be diagnosed mainly by examining patience medical history, physical exam and results from breathing tests like Spirometry.

Treatment

Asthma may be controller by using various tools and medicine available like peak flow meter, which keeps the measurement of how well the air is moving into the lungs. Proper care and medication must be taken to prevent worsening Asthma Attack in future.
